Soundproofing A Ceiling To Minimize Impact Sound

Soundproofing your ceiling may seem like a daunting task, but in many cases it is not as complicated of a job as it appears to be. A lot depends on how in depth you want to go in order to stop the noise that is transmitted from the floor above.

There are a variety of ways to soundproof a ceiling from Impact and airborne noise from above. One of the most common and effective ways to soundproof your ceiling requires removing your existing ceiling and then actually installing a new floated ceiling using Sound Isolation Clips and furring channels. What this system entails is actually floating a completely independent and resilient ceiling assembly.  The floated ceiling would be completely isolated from the adjoining walls as well as from the joist structure above. Isolating your ceiling from the structure above as well as the adjoining walls is the best way to stop the impact and airborne noise from being transferred down to the unit below.

  • Hi Scott,

A few months ago we purchased the Noise Eliminator Window inserts for our bedroom windows. We live downtown on the third floor of a high rise building on a very busy street. We were expecting it to be somewhat quieter, but we didn’t expect them to be almost sound proof! We went from tossing and turning all night because of the constant street noise, to sleeping all night through. And because of the custom color matching of our current window frames, you can barely see them. We did the installation ourselves and it was very simple. I would definitely recommend this product to anyone needing a quiet room!
